Increasing Productivity

All North East Improvement & Efficiency Partners are aware that there is a huge amount of waste in how services are delivered - both within and between local organisations. Our signature projects, which will release £51m, illustrate how shared services can deliver benefits and build capacity for authorities to streamline their own processes.

North East Service for disabled Blue Badges

A model built upon national best practice for the delivery of disability badges is currently being trialled. The aim of the pilot is to deliver a quicker, more effective service to customers which can then be rolled out across the whole region.
By standardising the application process through a regional online system, customers have just one point of contact, ensuring that all citizens have fair and equal access to the service. This will also serve to regulate the time customers can expect to wait for their application to be processed. Through fraud prevention and efficiency savings, authorities anticipate the streamlined service will provide a future cost avoidance of £750,000 by 2013.

A regional event took place on 9th September 2010 which demonstrated:

  • How massive efficiencies can be realised by implementing changes; (£150k efficiency savings during phase 1 of the improvements)
  • How major reductions in the processing and issue time for each badge from an average of 6 weeks to just 2 to 3 days
  • How to achieve huge reductions in avoidable contact and vast improvements in customer satisfaction
  • A much simpler end to end process with an instant decision for applicants
