Lead Members Network

The importance and complexity of the Children's Services agenda at both a regional and national level was reflected in the decision to make the lead Member of Children's Service a statutory role. A regional network for lead Members of Children's Services was established two years ago to support them in their work.

This project will build on the work of the regional network to equip Members to respond to the leadership challenge that the Children's and Young Services agenda presents. It will also support Members in developing their leadership role as described in the Local Government White paper, Strong and Prosperous Communities. The regional network will be strengthened and enhanced and increased individualised support will be provided to lead Members in the region to identify and meet their learning and support needs. The project will also provide the opportunity to share best practice with other regional networks of lead Members.

The project will support The North East's strategy for increased improvement and efficiency in public services to take forward a number of its key objectives in relation to the themes of: Children's Services; Regional Leadership; Partnerships; and Performance Management.

Key outputs of the project will include:

  • The development of strong and vibrant regional network that actively supports the development and delivery of effective political leadership for Children's Services;
  • Increased leadership skills across lead members of Children's Services;
  • Greater political ownership of and leadership for children and young people;
  • Improved outcomes for children and young people in the region, particularly for those from vulnerable groups;
  • Strengthened partnerships and the development of a strong relationship with the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership
  • Use of the regional network as a forum for consultation with lead Members;

Network events have already taken place during 2009 focusing on the issues of Safeguarding, Corporate Parenting and Commissioning. The following events are planned for 2010/11:

  • 18th June 2010 - Children's Centres
  • 1st October 2010 - Joined up Youth Service
