Sustainable Timber Procurement - assuring biomass supply chains

The North East continues to win national plaudits for its leading work in developing sustainable timber procurement policies in local government. The need for such policies is likely to become ever more important as interest in the use of biomass as a 'green' fuel continues to grow. It is critical that local authorities and their partners are able to assure the sustainability of their biomass supply chains if we are to avoid the problems which have beset the biofuel sector, where increasingly the evidence suggests that the production of biofuels from virgin sources, such a palm, is causing significant negative environmental impacts. By adopting a sustainable timber procurement policy local authorities and their partners can go some way towards ensuring that the woodfuels which feature in their supply chains are sustainably sourced.
