Better Procurement
Combining our buying power has been part of the way we do things in the North East for over 30 years. However, after 30 years, we still only jointly
procure around 10% of the £1.6billion spent by North East local authorities per annum. By 2013 our programme is expected to deliver additional savings of £160m.
Community Equipment
We have carried out an options appraisal into the potential efficiency savings available to councils if they invest in a regional stock of the 'Top 20' pieces of equipment that aide independent living for adults. This stock includes wheelchairs and mobility aids, bedroom and bathroom equipment, chairs and hoists. Eligible users will be assessed and given a prescription for their need which can be redeemed at any registered shop around the region.
The project will give users a more personal and improved service and an increased choice, as they are able to 'top-up' on their prescription if they prefer a more expensive item. Regionally the project is forecast to realise efficiencies of up to £4m per annum and councils will also benefit from the shared learning opportunities it presents.
