A new Programme of Learning & Development for Councillors
Given the increasing demands on elected members it is vital that new skills are learned and existing ones developed or enhanced. New councillors arriving after 6 May will recognise the expectation that they hit the ground running.
Through the RIEP's OD & Workforce Planning Programme, and in partnership with the North East Regional Employers' Organisation (NEREO), a programme has been devised which was designed by councillors for councillors. You can download a brochure here (published April 2010)
There is something in here for everyone: a chance to learn or improve essential skills, to exchange experience with colleagues or to access established development programmes. Specialist support is available for Portfolio Holders in Children's and Adult's Services, climate change and procurement, as well as in Overview and Scrutiny, community engagement and empowerment.
Extra funding for personal development
Further support is available for councils and FRSs to help individual councillors access more in-depth learning and development. There is up to £10,000 for each council and £5,000 for FRSs. The criteria for award of the grant is published here. To find out more, download the flyer.
