Institute for Local Governance

The North East Improvement & Efficiency Partnership, representing north east local authorities and their partners, committed funding for set up costs and the first 2 years of operation of the Institute for Local Governance (ILG).

Launched in October 2009, ILG is a pioneering research and knowledge exchange venture designed to maximise the benefits of collaboration between the region's universities and wider public realm. It is a unique research partnership between all the North East local authorities, universities, police, forces, fire and rescue services, Strategic Health Authority, One North East, and other public sector partners. In pursuing the local governance agenda, the ILG also seeks to work in collaboration with the region's private and third sector. The partnership has a shared vision to support innovation, improvement, efficiency and quality in public services. This is to be supported by establishing the Institute as an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field of local governance.
